Painting & Waterproofing

Painting and waterproofing often get treated as two separate jobs, but they go hand in hand. Paint is what you see; waterproofing is what stops moisture getting into the parts of the building you don't see. Doing both properly is what keeps a finish looking sharp for years instead of bubbling, flaking or staining after the first wet season.

Most of the work in a good paint job happens before the first coat goes on. That means washing down surfaces, scraping and sanding back loose or flaking paint, filling cracks and nail holes, patching damaged plaster, sealing bare or previously unpainted areas, and masking everything that isn't meant to be painted. Once the preparation is right, we apply the appropriate primer and topcoats for the surface and the conditions — interior walls and ceilings, timber trim and doors, rendered and fibre-cement exteriors, eaves, fences and garage doors.

On the waterproofing side, we work on bathrooms, laundries, balconies, terraces and other wet areas, as well as roof and parapet details where water tends to find its way in. The common problems we're brought in for are peeling paint in bathrooms, damp patches and efflorescence on walls, water tracking through from a balcony to the room below, cracked or failed membranes on older balconies, and tiles lifting where moisture has been sitting underneath.

It matters because water damage compounds. Moisture behind a wall or under a tiled floor keeps moving, and by the time it shows up as a stain or a musty smell it has usually already affected the substrate. Repairing a membrane and repainting is a far smaller job than replacing damaged plasterboard, flooring or framing later on, and a properly prepared paint system also protects exterior surfaces from UV and weather.
